I have found The Health Club for Women to be a warm, friendly and welcoming environment. It’s by far the cleanest gym I’ve ever worked out in and the equipment is great to use. I love the personal TV’s, which keeps me on a machine longer. I especially love the MP3 Fit player. It was perfect to work out to on my cruise and when I‘m unable to attend a cardio class. I would never push myself on a cardio machine the way I do with the MP3 Fit player. I even did my own spin class with it. I really enjoy BodyPump, Pilates and Spinning Classes for group motivation. I look forward to more classes to come and making new friends at the The Health Club for Women.

Just for the record, YOU GUYS SAVED MY LIFE, or at least my sanity. My dad passed away in May. Although it wasn't a surprise, it was, needless to say, devastating for me. The last 5 years I spent most of the time seeing he was cared for properly and with the dignity he deserved. After he passed I decided it was time to take care of myself, to see that I got healthy. I joined Weight Watchers a couple of weeks prior to his death and felt that I needed more to really get back in shape and to lose the 100 lbs I needed to lose. I was driving down Jones Road one day and saw the sign for The Health Club for Women, so I went in and talked to Cathy and joined. I have to say it has been the best thing I have done for me in a very long time. I love the fact that everyone is there to improve themselves, not to judge the person next to them because of their size. The classes offered are challenging for some and not so much for others, but there is no pressure to keep up with person next to you. The instructors are so encouraging and upbeat; they make it fun and you don't feel defeated because you're not perfect at it. The once-a-month get-togethers are fun and informative. The staff is the best around; they take time with you and make you feel welcome. I can't praise it enough. I'm addicted to everything about it. Yeah, The Health Club for Women!!!!

I had been wanting to exercise more and had been looking at treadmills, but didn't want to put one in my house and take up a lot of space. Then I had thought about joining a gym, but was too intimidated by them to even go and visit one. Then I received the flyer in the mail about the new Health Club for Women. It came at the right time. I visited the club on opening weekend and have been enjoying it since. Everyone made me feel so welcomed and comfortable from day one. After a couple of months I started training with Rachael and have been training once a week with her. She is so encouraging -- my balance and flexibility (which were important goals for me) have improved so much as well as having increased energy and being able to handle stress much better. But, the most enjoyable thing is the sense of community that I feel at the Club. It feels like a family, and that is what keeps me coming back. And, ironically, the flyer I received in the mail wasn't even addressed to me; it was for the previous home owner...geez, that was my lucky day!

Dear Health Club for Women:

As the New Year begins, I wanted to tell you how much The Health Club for Women has meant to me. You may recall why I joined last May; my daughter wanted to change her life for the better by getting in shape. We shopped for the perfect gym. After visiting several, we walked into The Health Club for Women, met Heather, and knew we found the right place. From the friendly, always smiling staff to the amenities, (including luxurious restrooms and free Christmas gift-wrapping!) we feel more at home with each visit.

To me the best thing about The Health Club for Women is the offering of Les Mills classes. Every class is a complete workout. Even though RPM/Cycling seems to be mostly cardio, I believe it is also strength training at the same time as I feel my arms and legs becoming stronger with each pedal. On the other hand, in BodyPump which is mostly strength training, I feel the cardio portion of the class kick-in as I push through each squat, lunge and overhead press. Research has taught us the benefits of both strength training and cardio in our quest to grow older healthier, so I am glad I can find both in one class. That is, if I stay for just one class. I find the sessions addicting and sometimes can’t leave, having to stay for 2 classes before returning home.

Even though I love how I feel, body and soul, after each Les Mills class, there is something I like about it even more – Maura – one of the instructors. Maura inspires you to push yourself farther than you normally would. Maura teaches about posture, breathing, and how to get the most out of your workout. Maura coaches you on how to get the most calorie burn and tips to keep with you when you are not working out - all while leading the class and making each of us feel that she is in tune with our fitness goals and particular needs. My most often used “Maura tip” is to press belly to the back, “zip it up” as Maura says, “shoulders down, chest out, belly in.” I do these when I walk my dog, stand in line at the grocery store – whenever I find myself carrying over gym life into everyday activities – yet another benefit from the Health Club for Women.

I signed up to help my daughter achieve her goals, but surprisingly I found a new me in the process. The changes in my body have led to changes in my spirit and sense of self. I am happier, stronger and I have a new friend –the person I see when I look in the mirror.

Thank you to The Health Club for Women, especially to Heather, Cathy, Maura and the other staff members who have shown dedication to me and other members every time we walk in the door.
